Featuring a cover of Michael Jackson's "Dirty Diana," Echoes of Silence (December) completed the trilogy just before the end of the year. A similar second mixtape, Thursday (August), preceded several appearances on Drake's album Take Care. Recorded in collaboration with producers Doc McKinney and Illangelo, among others, the set garnered widespread coverage within days of its release.
The first one was House of Balloons (March), where clear traces of radio-friendly contemporary R&B à la Trey Songz, Jeremih, the-Dream, and Drake were synthesized with the progressive left-of-center likes of Spacek and Sa-Ra.

The singer and songwriter arrived in 2011 with three mixtapes offering morose ballads that seemed to have no designs on mainstream appeal. House of Balloons is actually a real place located at 65 Spencer Ave, Toronto, and in an interview with Rolling stone, he explains that he chose the title, House of Balloons, because that’s where he first lived after he dropped out of school at 17, saying: The mixtape describes a life filled with drugs and sex and The Weeknd himself described it as “anti-everything.” Because of this, it is widely considered one of the most influential R&B projects in recent years. The project, primarily produced by Illangelo and Doc McKinney, pushed the boundaries of R&B, with its influences of trip-hop, indie rock and dream pop and incorporations of electronic/urban genres. The bonus track for this mixtape was his twenty-eighth song, “Twenty Eight”. House of Balloons, along with Thursday and Echoes of Silence, was later remastered as the Trilogy album in 2012, with one extra song on each tape.
